Swedish Massage

Among the most popular and commonly practiced massage techniques is Swedish Massage. This massage relieves muscle tension and is known as the ‘Classic Massage.’

A Swedish Massage leaves the client relaxed and rejuvenated when carried out by an expert practitioner. This technique can loosen the muscle tension from our daily routine. Both sitting in one place for a long time – at the desk at work – and rigorous exercise can cause muscle tightness.

Used by athletes to keep in shape, the Swedish Massage is often applied to the lower back, the shoulders, and the neck, which are the areas where muscle tension is commonly experienced.

Techniques used in a Swedish Massage include kneading, long strokes, deep, circular strokes, and passive joint movements. It is one of the gentler forms of massage.

Deep Tissue Massage

A more robust and dedicated technique, Deep Tissue Massage, involves warming up the muscles briefly, and then the practitioner will adopt a rhythm and use long and flowing strokes to pressure the muscles. This type of massage is applied to the entire body.

The Deep Tissue Massage goes further than the Swedish Massage, using considerably more pressure to work the muscle. For some clients, this can elicit pain but not in the way trauma or injury will. It has been described as ‘good’ pain by those who have benefitted from this method.

A significant reduction in muscle and other tension in the body makes Deep Tissue Massage a preferred method for patients recovering from injury or exercise. It is also used where musculoskeletal issues are involved, as the deep stimulation of the muscles is highly beneficial.

Deep and slow strokes that target the layer of muscles beneath the surface are the core of the technique. This sustained application of pressure also stimulates blood flow. This involves loosening tight muscles and attending to knots and pulled muscles so the patient can be more relaxed.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage is a favorite of many people seeking relief from pain. It has its roots in ancient civilizations that used the technique for relaxation, pain relief, and spiritual well-being. Once rarely practiced, Hot Stone Massage has recently witnessed a resurgence and is now among the most popular forms. It is often combined with the Swedish Massage Technique.

The technique involves, as the name implies, hot stones being placed on certain parts of the body. Traditionally, volcanic stone – usually basalt – is used. The stones are placed in water, and an electric heat source is applied to bring them to the required operating temperature.

The smooth and flat stones are usually placed on the back, held in the hands, and between the toes. The heat relaxes muscles so that the practitioner can apply deeper and more successful massed techniques if necessary.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

A Lymphatic Drainage Massage is helpful in stimulating lymph flow circulation. It is a gentle method using slow and rhythmic pressure that will help to ease swelling, inflammation, and water retention. The technique also heals while detoxifying and strengthening the immune system.

Always talk to a doctor about these symptoms, as some conditions require a medical professional’s consent before the massage. These include:

  • Acute conditions due to bacterial or viral infection
  • Recent thrombosis
  • Edema due to kidney disease
  • Malignancy
  • Lymphatic obstruction
Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial Release Therapy helps with adhesions in the skin and can be used to treat chronic pain that has come through damaged Myofascial tissue. This can be from injuries, trauma, over-exertion, or poor posture and scar tissue.

Myofascial pain is caused by excess pressure on the muscles resulting in chronic pain. Myofascial Release Therapy is conducted slowly with continued steady pressure and stretching.

Many conditions can be treated this way, and Myofascial Release Therapy helps with chronic pain and improves motion. Some of the more commonly seen conditions that are treated with this method include:

  • Chronic neck pain and back pain
  • Chronic shoulder and hip restrictions
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Migraines and headaches
  • IT band friction syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis (the most common type of heel pain)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Whiplash
  • Scar tissue
  • Acute sprains and strains
  • Poor posture and/or loss of flexibility

The technique is not known to carry many risks but is not suitable for patients suffering from the following:

  • Burns
  • Open wounds
  • Skin diseases
  • Fractures or broken bones
  • Deep vein thrombosis or deep vein issues
  • Blood thinners
  • Hemophilia or any bleeding disorder
Cupping Therapy

Cupping Therapy originated in ancient China and is widely used in massages today. It involves the placing of cups on various parts of the body, usually left for not more than three minutes. It pulls an area of skin into a suction that decompresses muscles and connective tissue. This enhances blood flow to the compromised area, promotes better circulation, enables smooth gliding movement between the tissues, and helps to increase the body’s healing processes. The stagnation of the area is not painful, the only side effect is the reddening of the skin that may last up to five days.

Abdominal Massage

Abdominal Massage is a simple method of massage that is often applied when patients are suffering from the following:

  • Indigestion

Face Massage

Massaging your face is a therapy that will make you look healthier and feel more toned. A massage is designed to target muscles and tissues that will help to have better blood and lymph circulation, and relieve tension. Massaging the face is traditionally done using the hands, applying oil or lotion often eases movement across delicate facial areas.

Scalp Massage

A scalp massage focuses solely on the head, neck and behind the ears. It is often given using the fingers and palm. Nourishing oil is sometimes applied to the scalp to relax and soothe it. The fundamental goal of a scalp massage is to relieve tension in the head and neck region. We often unconsciously hold tension in our jaw and behind our ears. It relaxes the nervous system, reduces stress and promotes feelings of calmness, eases muscle tension and alleviates pain or discomfort.

Foot Massage

A regular foot massage may be used to improve one’s health and relax the body. Although foot massages are commonly associated with being performed by someone’s hands, in some cases, different tools such as sticks or rollers may be used to stimulate the reflex areas located on the feet more effectively.

Here are some of the benefits of a regular foot massage:

  • A foot massage may be a beneficial treatment that improves your entire body.
  • A sense of balance and relaxation
  • A foot massage isn’t just soothing; it can also lead to a better night’s sleep and an infusion of energy for your day ahead.
  • It helps improve blood circulation.
  • Massaging the limbs aids blood circulation throughout the body, promoting cell healing and development.
  • It may also be used as pain relief, to assist with stress reduction and even to speed up injury recovery
TMJ Massage

TMJ Massage is an intraoral massage technique for Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD), a disorder of the temporomandibular joint, muscles of mastication, and associated structures. TMJD is characterized primarily by restriction of movement in the jaw, both sides not coordinated, noise in the joint, headaches, neck muscle tightness, and orofacial pain.

Prenatal Massage

Massage therapy is an excellent option for any pregnant client because it allows the woman to feel unified and grounded in her experience of pregnancy. Some of the many benefits of massage during pregnancy include decrease in nausea, reduction in swelling of the feet and hands, lessening of pain and discomfort, stress relief, improved hormonal function, and support in healthy development of the baby. In addition, women who receive this nurturing touch are often more likely to extend nurturing energy to their infant.
